Salamanca woman (charra)

I told you I had an artistic photo taken in Salamanca. This is it.

I took this one in the Cathedral and, once again, I had to follow my subject around. I spotted her when I went in and immediatly noticed that she was walking very slowly and with difficulty. The day before I had noticed that there was set of candle shedding very little light over a corner of the cathedral and thought "Hum... I wonder what she would look like near the candles."

Originaly, I wanted the picture to be in colours, but after a miute or two after walking in, I got distracted and lost her. So I had to track her down and my the time she was near the candles it was too late to set the camera back to colours (I had set the camera for black and white). So this is her.

This is also one of my all-time favourites because the woman sees tiny.

Bairro Alto - Lisbon

Plaza Mayor

I probably took about 10 pictures at Plaza Mayor, in Salamanca. This is the only decent one.

Plaza Mayor is (I think) the central square in the city, as it was the case back in the day. It's a huge squre, with a large centre, where go and have expensive coffees, sit around doing nothing, fall asleep on the ground because it's made of stone, which is fresh during the summer (Yes, Hugo.) (inside joke). But when I was there, there was a book fair going on, so the pictures of the square were very limited.

Around the square is where it is the Municipal Council, and overly-priced degraded houses, empty houses and one or two hotels.

Salamanca Exhibition # 4

One of my first picksfor the exhibition. It's in the Castle, in Lisbon. Only after a week or so did I realize who Biblical it looked, with the tree and the light.
I remember being a kid and going up to the Castle and seeing this tree there, exactly it is now. In over 10 years that it hasn't changed. I love who the leaves are very crips.
There's something about it.

1st days of work

So far so good.

I am now getting the grip of things, and everything seems to be running more smoothly, which is nice. The days don’t seem so endless and I can see I do things faster.

More pictures to come in the future.

Salamanca Exhibition # 2

30 Março 2009 - Napping
I took this picture in Lisbon, near the S. Carlos National Theatre. This old man was probably taking a nap as it was after lunch and I took the opportunity to snap a picture. There was a foreign couple sitting on a bench next to him who saw me taking the picture and were always pointing at me and whispering. I didn't hear what they were saying, but I didn't need.
On the background you see a statue of a man with a book instead of a head. That is Fernando Pessoa, famous Portuguese poet, although in real life he did have a head. It was built to comemorate the100 years of his birth (I think) and placed in this square because he lived for a very long time on the building behind it (windows with varandas).

Colombo's drawings

This is amazing!

I usually read the mazagine The New Yorker online and I noticed that this week's cover was amazing. No, not amazing, fantabulistic!

And now, after a little surfing trip through Blogtailors, they reported that the cover was made by a Portuguese artist, Jorge Colombo, ... on his iphone. I, too, am a little bit fed up with all the Apple frenzy, bu this cover is amaz... fantabulistic.

I may not be an art specialist, but the cover is AWESOME!

You can go here for his home page, and here you can read an article on him and his cover on a Portuguese newspaper.

Update 28 May: Here, is the The New Yorker's page with Colombo's video, drawing the picture.

Working girl

I finally found a job!

After 1 year of sending out résumés, it finally paid off.

I was already giving English lessons (so not 100% unemployed) and last week I received an e-mail from a translation company asking if I was still interested in a job. They were looking for someone for a position as project manager at the translation company who would later also do some translations. After an exchange of e-mails, they sent me some tests, I did them (somewhat difficult, I must admit) and we scheduled a meeting for Monday.

I thought I did well on the interview and they told me they would call me with an answer on the following they. Positive or negative. (at least that was fast). And they did. They called me on Tuesday and asked me to come in on Wednesday (today). I mean, I'll be interning for 1 year and after that I will be considered an emplyee of the company. The best part is that the internship is paid. 900 € plus 120 € for lunch per month. Not bad! And, of all the translation companies that there are out there in Portugal, I found out that a friend of mine is also working there! Small world.

So, today I went to work. What I do is more technical than creative (translation). I have to answer e-mail and phone call from people who make requests for budgets for translations, put the files through a server, fill in the name of the client and the project, establish a budget and send it to them.
So, I can know be considered as being part of cooperate Portugal.
Iei for me!!!

Casa de las Conchas (Shell House)

It sounds like something by the sea, but it isn’t. It’s a former house now library in Salamanca, with shells on the outside. The house has this name (and decorations) because Rodrigo Maldonado, from the Order of Santiago, had the house built in the early 16th century and the shells were the symbol of the Order.

Inside, to the right, there were these pink mannequins. They were the colour of bubblegum and were about 1.80 m tall. Everyone was taking pictures at the mannequins and with the mannequins.

(© Sara Rodrigues Pereira – Pink Mannequins)

On Friday, there was going to be a concert there (after the library was closed, obviously) and they were just setting the stage ready when we got there. Hugo and Phillip Jenkins (from “The Lisbons”) asked me to take a picture of them sitting on the stage to pretend it was their stage.

Billie's cursing

Years in night-club dressing rooms, in cabarets and juke joints had taught me every combination of profanity, or so I thought. Billie Holiday’s language was a mixture of mockery and vulgarity that caught me without warning. Although she used the old common words, they were in new arrangements, and spoken in that casual tone which seemed to drag itself, rasping, across the ears.

Salamanca's Cathedral

While I was in Salamanca, I took more than 300 pictures. Which is a normal amount, for me . Of all of these, I’ll probably end up with 20 good ones.

One of the most beautiful building there, in my opinion, is the Cathedral. It took them close to 200 years to finish and then, one they were done, they rebuilt it. So now there is the Old Cathedral and the New Cathedral, all in one.

(© Sara Rodrigues Pereira-16 Maio 2009)

I took this picture in sepia because it just looked so beautiful and I wanted to make it look like an old pictures (minus the modern day looking people right at the bottom…)

The Cathedral is not big, it’s huge and recently it underwent some construction works and someone (Hugo told me “a man”) decided to include something bizarre near the door. Can you see?

(© Sara Rodrigues Pereira-16 Maio 2009)

No? How about now?

(© Sara Rodrigues Pereira - 15 Maio 2009)

As you can see, there is an astronaut on the façade. Iup, an astronaut. Leave it to men do think of something like that!

(I also have a very artistic picture of an old lady I followed inside the cathedral, but that will come later.)

Salamanca

So, Salamanca...

City of sun and students. Lots of students.

I arrived there at midnight, after a 6-hour train ride, on friday. Technically, it was friday because it was already midnight. I was on a train car with 6 more students, 3 of which (4 with me) also heading to Salamanca for their final exams (not me).

When I got there, Hugo, my friend, took me to hotel where I stayed up until 2 in the morning because I could not sleep. It's not that the bed wasn't confortable (that pillow, my God!), I just wasn't sleepy. He was going to be my official guide to the city, and so we met the next day for breakfast and sighseeing.

Before he got there the next morning, I went out to explore the surroundings, and near the hotel was this bench with a smile on! I couldn't resist and take take a picture. (I'll save the more artistic ones for later).

These are just pictures of textures.

Back from Salamanca

And I'm back!

I arrived on Sunday at 11 a.m. (came on the 5 a.m. train). After 1 1/2 hour of sleep, I arrived to Sunny Lisbon.

Now I need to put my 300 pictures of Salamanca on my pc and then on the blog. I 'll try and do it this week.

Keep coming by.

1 to Sal.

1 more day before taking a train to Salamanca! I am super happy and excited. Apart from the 7-hour train ride part.

I'll be staying for 2 days and two days ago, I realized that I'll be there during party days: friday and saturday. Better yet, viernes and sábado. I'll be taking the train back to Lisbon on sunday (domingo) at 5 in the morning.

Lots of pictures will be taken, I am sure.

Stolen Pictures

(it's the name of the newspaper article)

Regarding my photography exhibition, I gave a phone interview to a very prestigious and expensive portuguese culture newspaper about 3 or 4 weeks ago (my first photography exhibition came with a complementary newspaper article...).

The artile came out last wednesday, and it is here. It's written in Portuguese, but still, Enjoy!

I bought the newspaper and today I found out it was available online for free.

I Love You

Remember falling in love to this ↓?

No? Shame on you. It's 18 love stories, each one set in a different district in Paris, each directed by a different director and tons of actores and actrices. Just to name a few directors you have Gérard Depardieu, Olivier Assayas, Sylvain Chomet, Gus Van Sant or the Coen Brothers. When it comes to actors, well, they are literaly, tons: Gaspard Ulliel, Natalie Portman, Elijah Wood, Steve Buscemi, Maggie Gyllenhaal, Nick Nolte, Fanny Ardant, Emily Mortimor, and many more. (movie trailer here).

Well, now there is going to be an american version, this time focussing on NYC. The concept is the same - 1 director per area in NYC and a handfull of great actors and stories - and it is almost opening in the US. Can't wait to watch this one. (poster below, movie info here and trailer here)

Laughing Matters

(© Sara Rodrigues Pereira - 31 Março 2009)

I have no ideia who these people are. Apparently, this lack of knowledge is becoming recorrent.

I saw this couple last week in a square is Lisbon, drinking beer and just hanging. They must have been camera shy because everytime I tried to take a picture, the girl would turn her head away from me. This is the best I could do.
I like the picture beacuse he looks really happy. I caught him him the middle of a relatively loud laughter. The colors, well, I am just playing with them.

Knock Knock Knocking on doors

(© Sara Rodrigues Pereira - Flower Power, 30 Março 2009)

I found these doors somewhere in Lisbon. I honestly don't know where I was at the time. I started walking and following people I tought would make good pictures and, next thing I now, I don't know where I am. I mean, I knew more or less where I would eventually end up, but I am still clueless as to the name of the street.

It reads "Sara, you're a ..." Logic ending to the sentence.

Exhibited Photographer (?!)

(when an author publishes a book, he is a 'published author'. When a photographer - even an amateur one such as myself - has an exhibiton of their photos they are an 'exhibited photographer'?)

OH MY GOD!

On Saturday, I received an e-mail from Hugo, a friend of mine living in Salamanca (Spain) and fellow blogger, asking me if I wanted to exhibit some of my photos there!

YES!!

From what I could gather, there are going to be several activities under the same subject. Hugo asked me for pictures regarding "immigrants", "multiculturalism" and "documentary". I only have a few with people - I do mostly details or buildings - so I think I now might have to go and extend my portfolio (or create one). He wants about 10 to 15 pictures with people in the streets, showing the culture, and stuff like that. More, he alreday named the exhibition. "Gentes en Lisboa" (People in Lisbon)! I better step up my game!
The one bellow, however, has to be included because I LOVE IT.

(© Sara Rodrigues Pereira)

"Funny" story: The man with a black coat and hat, with his arm raised - a homeless - started insulting and threatening me. I snaped the picture and left. Really fast.

"Gentes en Lisboa", by Sara Rodrigues Pereira, May 11 to 30, Salamanca, Las Caballerizas (The Stables) - it's in the university's cafeteria, an old stable, hence the name.

There is no business like the show business

Last night I when to the theatre!!!

Yes!!

It’s been a while since I last sat butt in those deliciously upholstered really comfy red chairs. It when to watch… THE PRODUCERS.

It was ar Teatro Tivoli, in Lisbon. I have a picture of it here (the man selling chestnuts was not there).

The play tells the story of a guy, Max Bialystock (run-down theatre producer who got his money to put up plays by fulfilling kinky sexual fantasies for really creepy, old rich ladies - main poster, far left), who, together with his new accounting guy, Leo Bloom (who still carries around his baby blanket and needs to stroke it whenever he feels nervous), realise that it is more profitable to make a bad show than a good one: the investors give them money to produce the show (first rule of production: there put your own money in the show), they put on the play but if the play closed because it sucked, they forge the books and keep the remaining money for themselves. And so they decide to produce a musical written by a crazy Hitler-loving pigeon breeder (third from left to right), directed by the most gay of gay stage directors (second from right to left, guy in blue dress. Yes) with a screw that seemed like it just came from the Gay Pride Parade. Superb. Then, they ad a sexy, barely speaking English (in this case, Portuguese) hot secretary/receptionist - center - who dances and flirts her way into their hearts and other anatomic lower parts (…) and you have a Broadway production, filled with … well, I am not going to tell you everything.

The play, oh my God, it was pure theatre. The kind of play made to entertain. It wasn’t meant to educate or teach something, no, it was a play to entertain. There were these high-school kids there who clapped and cheered and whistled more than anyone else. They really seemed to be having a good time. I also did, but I didn’t whistled, specially when Ulla, the sexy Swedish secretary/receptionist showed off her assets (she is a famous soap opera actress in her 20's in real life).

(I had to include this picture because Leo is stroking the baby blanket)

The play began at 9.30 pm and ended after midnight! It was 2 hours and 20 minutes, give or take, plus intermission, plus delays. It began really late, like it does in most theatres in Lisbon, for a reason I don’t know why. I think it would make more sense to start the show at 8, 8.30. Like that, people would get off work at 7 (normal hour to leave work), go to the theatre, grab a bite in a restaurant close by and head off to enjoy a good overpriced show (my ticket was free, I am not complaining). Despite the price (that some people paid), it was so worth it.

I can't wait to catch another play!

Readin' in the Sun

I don't know why but I love this picture. It was taken on Tuesday, and Lisbon was boiling. It was very hot and this guy was just sitting by the shop window reading and enjoying the sun. I envied him as I am sure many passerbys did.

Gotta Go On Loving Lisbon

During the summer months, for a reason which I consider to be stupid even though I don't know why it was taken, the Sta. Justa Elevator had a plexiglass surface all around the sides, as can be (not very well) seen here. Remember? Probably not. I don't think it was to prevent people from jumping because there are wall of worked iron (i think) all around the elevator and the corridor leading there, except for maybe a 5 cm-gap, enough for 'people' to stick their hands and cameras through it and take pictues.

Anyway, I went there again earlier this week because the view from the city is amazing and as I was leaving I noticed that the plexiglass was gone! Hurray!!!

So here is another picture, this time properly taken.

Fu*#?% up English, Part II

I swear I am not obsessed with these texts. The truth is that I had forgotten I had then in my pee sea (get it? If not, check post bellow) and they are so funny I couldn't resist to put them up here. Although this is not so funny as the firt one I posted.

This one I present you is from 1902. Yes, 1902.

OUR STRANGE LINGO

When the English tongue we speak.
Why is break not rhymed with freak?
Will you tell me why it's true
We say sew but likewise few?
And the maker of the verse,
Cannot rhyme his horse with worse?
Beard is not the same as heard
Cord is different from word.
Cow is cow but low is low
Shoe is never rhymed with foe.
Think of hose, dose,and lose

And think of goose and yet with choose
Think of comb, tomb and bomb,
Doll and roll or home and some.
Since pay is rhymed with say
Why not paid with said I pray?
Think of blood, food and good.
Mould is not pronounced like could.
Wherefore done, but gone and lone -
Is there any reason known?
To sum up all, it seems to me
Sound and letters don't agree.

My # 1 photo

I have no idea when I took this picture - I mean, I know it was in 2007 or 2008, but I don't know any specifics. Anyway, this is probably my my favorite picture. Get it? I is my favorite picture of all the pictures I have taken.

I remember very clearly who cold it was, who I had to lean on a railing to take the picure (this was attempt number 3). I also remember who much hate I felt for a tourism who placed himself behind me when I was taking the picture and then took one (probably) just like mine. The nerve!

This is my # 1 fav photo of all times. It is Lisbon's Cathedral with tree branches in the front.
